Huawei's Mate 10 Pro Hits U.S. in Feburary as a $799 Unlocked Phone.
LAS VEGAS — Huawei's Mate 10 Pro finally has a U.S. release date, a price and even a fancy alternative version whipped up by Porsche Design. What it doesn't have is a wireless carrier as a launch partner, as had been reported.

Credit: HuaweiHuawei announced today (Jan. 9) that it will start taking preorders for its Mate 10 Pro flagship phone on Feb. 4. Order the $799 phone before it officially goes on sale Feb. 18, and you can get a $150 gift card from whichever retailer you place your order with.

You can buy a Mate 10 in Midnight Black or Titanium Gray from Amazon, Best Buy, Microsoft, B&H and Newegg. Missing from that list is any wireless carrier. In the buildup to the Mate 10 Pro's U.S. launch, rumors had suggested the phone maker would team up with AT&T to offer the phone. However, a day before Huawei's keynote here at CES 2018, the Wall Street Journal reported that AT&T had walked away from the deal.

Spectre mitigations arrive in latest Nvidia GPU drivers.
It's not just CPUs that are impacted by Spectre, as graphics giant Nvidia has released a new set of drivers that contain some mitigations against the side-channel vulnerability.

In a short security bulletin, Nvidia said it had no reason to believe it was affected by the largely Intel-specific Meltdown, but its entire GeForce, Quadro, NVS, Tesla, and Grid products were hit by Spectre.

Updated drivers for GeForce, Quadro, and NVS are available now, with all Tesla and Grid drivers to be updated before the end of the month.

After this initial release, Nvidia said it would work with its partners on further mitigations.

WPA3 is coming to Wi-Fi routers in 2018, with better encryption and login management.
Anyone who has ever set up a router is probably familiar with Wireless Protected Access, or WPA encryption. Now the stage is set for WPA3, an improved Wi-Fi security protocol that brings improved security to network devices.

At CES on Monday, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced WPA3, whose improvements will slowly roll out during 2018 in new devices. The Alliance also announced several improvements to the current, but aging WPA2 spec (in place since 2004), to secure it while WPA3-compliant devices move into the market.

WPA's chief improvements include individualized data encryption, so that hackers lurking on public Wi-Fi networks will find it more difficult to listen in on your wireless communications. More importantly, WPA3 also enforces interaction with the network when a password is entered, signalling the hotspot or router that someone is trying to guess your password and enabling limits to be placed on the number of guesses.

Without the protections enabled by WPA3, attackers could simply retry common passwords, such as "123456," until the router or hotspot let them in. With WPA3, the router could be configured to restrict access or even notify you that an attacker (or just a nosy neighbor) was trying to access your network.
